In a bold step toward revitalizing Nigeria’s agricultural landscape, the Federal Government, in partnership with the Nasarawa State Government, has launched a large-scale fertilizer distribution campaign targeting 74,800 smallholder farmers. This initiative, themed “Each Farmer to a Bag of Fertilizer,” underscores a national commitment to food security, rural development, and agribusiness modernization.
Unveiled in Lafia, the programme allocates 500 bags of fertilizer to each of the 147 political wards and 100 bags to each of the 13 Local Government Areas. The fertilizers urea, NPK, and organic blends are designed to match local soil profiles, with extension services deployed to optimize application and increase yields.
Governor Abdullahi Sule hailed the effort as a strategic empowerment initiative, aligned with Nasarawa’s vision for rural transformation. Highlighting achievements such as the cultivation of 2,000 hectares of rice in Jangwa and plans for an additional 3,500 hectares in Danka/Ayarkeke, he affirmed the state’s push for mechanized farming and input accessibility.
The Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Food Security emphasized the programme’s role in bridging policy and practice: “This effort empowers farmers and enhances national food systems.”
The state affirmed the fertilizer will be distributed free of charge under strict monitoring, with zero tolerance for diversion. Complementary investments in rural infrastructure, security, and input financing further underscore a holistic strategy for agricultural growth. This milestone reflects strong federal-state synergy in transforming Nigeria’s food economy.
