Seplat Energy Plc, in partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Limited), has achieved a key milestone in Nigeria’s initiative to increase local gas usage. They successfully transported 12,600 metric tons of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Butane from the Bonny River Terminal (BRT) in Rivers State. Historically serving mainly as an export centre, the BRT has now converted into a channel for domestic supply. This transformation helps address Nigeria’s rapidly increasing need for cooking gas through sufficient local provision.
The development highlights Seplat’s strategic commitment to expanding the gas value chain, decreasing reliance on imports, and supporting the Federal Government’s energy transition agenda. By improving domestic distribution, the company is enhancing access to clean cooking fuel, which helps reduce deforestation and lower carbon emissions from traditional biomass sources that are still utilised by over 80% of Nigerian households.
Two key initiatives are pivotal to Seplat’s vision: the 300 MMscfd ANOH Gas Plant in Imo State and the 90 MMscfd Sapele Gas Plant in Delta State, both of which are approaching completion and set to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2025. Combined, these projects will generate more than 280MT of LPG daily, greatly enhancing its local availability.
Roger Brown, the CEO of Seplat Energy, highlighted that the consumption of gas and LPG is growing quickly in Nigeria. He pointed out that a dependable domestic supply is vital for attaining energy security, lowering carbon emissions, and improving air quality. Brown expressed, “At Seplat, we take pride in being at the forefront of this significant transition.”
Seplat’s momentum increased following its acquisition of Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited (now Seplat Energy Producing Nigeria Unlimited) in late 2024. This acquisition propelled production in the first half of 2025 to 134,492 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd), nearly tripling the output from the previous year. Additionally, revenues surged by 206.5% in the second quarter, reaching ₦939.2 billion, which contributed to first-half earnings of ₦2.1 trillion
With increasing production, a growing gas infrastructure, and solid financial results, Seplat Energy is establishing itself as a crucial player in Nigeria’s domestic gas revolution and ensuring long-term energy security.
