TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited has announced plans to inaugurate a five-megawatt (5 MW) solar power plant at Oil Mining Lease (OML) 58 that will supply dedicated electricity to its Ubeta Gas Project, marking a major step in the company’s drive to cut emissions while expanding energy output in Nigeria. The Managing Director of TotalEnergies EP Nigeria, Mathieu Bouyer, made the announcement during a panel session titled “Capitalising on Africa’s Global Upstream Momentum” at the 2026 Nigeria International Energy Summit (NIES) in Abuja. The summit gathers industry leaders to review investment flows and emerging opportunities across Africa’s oil and gas sector.
According to Bouyer, the 5 MW solar facility is a critical component of the Ubeta development and a cornerstone of TotalEnergies’ strategy to reduce reliance on conventional power sources and lower the carbon intensity of its operations. The plant is expected to provide a reliable and cleaner power supply directly to operations on OML 58, significantly shrinking the field’s environmental footprint and helping position the Ubeta project as one of the world’s first near-net-zero gas developments.
The Ubeta Gas Project itself is a major gas development within OML 58 that is designed to deliver large volumes of natural gas for both domestic consumption and industrial use, reinforcing Nigeria’s energy infrastructure. The integration of solar power into the project aligns with TotalEnergies’ global ambition to deliver more energy with fewer emissions, balancing increased oil and gas production with renewable-based electricity generation. This dual-focus strategy reflects the company’s commitment to expanding energy supply in Nigeria while integrating cleaner power solutions into traditional hydrocarbon operations.
Bouyer also reiterated TotalEnergies’ long-term commitment to the Nigerian market, describing the country as a key investment destination within the company’s global portfolio. He highlighted that expanding renewable energy infrastructure, such as the planned solar plant, underscores TotalEnergies’ drive to diversify energy sources and support the country’s transition toward lower-emission energy systems.
The solar installation at OML 58 is expected to not only reduce operational emissions but also improve efficiency and energy reliability for the Ubeta project, demonstrating how renewable energy can be integrated into upstream oil and gas developments to deliver tangible environmental benefits.
