The Federal Government has partnered with global online learning platform Coursera to provide digital training for 36,000 Nigerian youths in high-demand technology fields including artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, data science, and software development.
The initiative is being implemented through the Federal Ministry of Youth Development as part of efforts to expand digital skills, improve youth employability, and position Nigeria’s workforce for opportunities in the global digital economy.
According to the ministry, beneficiaries will receive access to professional certification programmes and career-focused courses designed by leading global technology companies and universities through the Coursera platform. The programme will focus heavily on practical and industry-relevant skills in areas such as AI engineering, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and digital business operations.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, described the partnership as part of the government’s broader strategy to empower Nigerian youths with globally competitive skills capable of driving innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth. He noted that the increasing adoption of AI and digital technologies worldwide makes technical upskilling critical for Nigeria’s future workforce.
Officials said the programme is also expected to improve access to remote work opportunities and strengthen Nigeria’s participation in the fast-growing global outsourcing and digital services economy.
Under the arrangement, selected participants will undergo structured learning pathways and receive internationally recognised certifications upon completion, improving their competitiveness in both local and international job markets.
Industry stakeholders say the partnership reflects growing collaboration between governments and global technology platforms to address Africa’s widening digital skills gap. Analysts also note that demand for AI, cybersecurity, and cloud computing professionals has increased significantly as businesses accelerate digital transformation efforts worldwide.
The initiative comes amid broader efforts by the Nigerian government to expand digital literacy, support innovation ecosystems, and create employment opportunities for young people in technology-driven sectors.
