The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has commenced the implementation of a fully electronic registration (e-Registration) process for designated capital market regulatory services, marking another major milestone in the Commission’s digital transformation agenda. The initiative enables selected registration processes for Capital Market Operators (CMOs) to be completed entirely online through the SEC’s ePortal, eliminating manual paperwork and improving regulatory efficiency.
According to the Commission, the new platform digitises the entire regulatory workflow for the services covered in the current phase, including application submission, document review, regulatory approvals, and communication of decisions. By automating these processes, the SEC aims to simplify interactions with market operators, reduce administrative bottlenecks, shorten processing timelines, and provide applicants with real-time visibility into the status of their applications.
The Commission stated that the migration to a fully digital registration system will strengthen regulatory oversight by introducing standardised workflows, secure electronic documentation, enhanced audit trails, and improved digital record management. These enhancements are expected to increase transparency, improve data quality for regulatory decision-making, and create a more efficient compliance environment for market participants.
The SEC noted that the e-Registration platform aligns with its strategic objective of leveraging technology to improve the ease of doing business in Nigeria’s capital market while enhancing investor confidence. The initiative also provides a stronger foundation for regulatory analytics and future digital innovations designed to strengthen market supervision and operational effectiveness.
Implementation of the platform will be carried out in phases to ensure a smooth transition and minimise disruption to market operations. In the current phase, the electronic registration process applies only to post-registration services for existing Capital Market Operators. The Commission clarified that new registration applications for prospective market entrants are not yet included, adding that the commencement date for fully electronic processing of new applications will be announced separately.
The SEC has encouraged all existing Capital Market Operators to familiarise themselves with the new e-Registration platform and comply with the implementation timelines to ensure a seamless migration to the digital system. The Commission emphasised that the initiative forms part of its broader modernisation programme aimed at improving regulatory service delivery, strengthening market infrastructure, enhancing transparency, and promoting the continued growth and global competitiveness of Nigeria’s capital market.

For market participants, the digital platform is expected to reduce compliance costs, minimise delays associated with paper-based processing, and improve the overall efficiency of regulatory engagements with the Commission. By replacing manual processes with automated workflows, the SEC aims to create a faster, more predictable, and technology-driven regulatory environment that supports innovation and facilitates capital market development. The rollout of the e-Registration platform is another significant step in the SEC’s ongoing efforts to modernise Nigeria’s capital market through digital transformation. Together with other technology-driven reforms, the initiative is expected to improve the quality of regulatory services, strengthen investor protection, and enhance the competitiveness of Nigeria’s capital market within the global financial system.
