The Abia State Government and the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the construction of an access road across the railway corridor in Umuahia, aimed at improving connectivity and integrating road and rail transportation.
The agreement provides for the construction of a road linking Okpara Square and Akanu Ibiam Street (Goodshed) to Bende Road. The project is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve movement within the Abia State capital.

Governor Alex Otti said the project forms part of the state government’s broader plan to transform Umuahia’s transport infrastructure. He noted that the proposed railway station would be integrated with the Umuahia Central Bus Terminal, creating a transportation hub where rail and road services can operate in closer coordination.
The Governor also directed relevant state officials, including the Commissioners for Transport and Works and the General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority, to coordinate implementation and ensure the project progresses without unnecessary delays.
NRC Managing Director, Dr Kayode Opeifa, said the agreement was made possible after the state fulfilled the requirements set by the corporation. He said the access road would strengthen connectivity, ease traffic and support broader economic activity in the city.
The project is part of wider efforts to develop an integrated transport network in Umuahia. Improved links between railway infrastructure, bus services and major roads could enhance passenger mobility, support commercial activity and increase the economic value of surrounding areas.
For Abia, successful implementation could also strengthen the state’s urban infrastructure and create a more efficient multimodal transport system connecting businesses, residents and regional markets.
