Airtel Africa and Starlink have commercially launched a satellite-to-mobile service in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), marking the first commercial deployment of Starlink Mobile in Africa. The service allows Airtel customers with compatible smartphones to connect to Starlink satellites in areas where conventional terrestrial mobile networks are unavailable.
The new service is designed to extend mobile connectivity to remote and underserved areas without requiring customers to install a satellite dish, purchase specialised equipment, or carry a separate satellite device. Users with compatible LTE Android smartphones can connect directly to the satellite network when they have a clear view of the sky.
At its initial stage, Starlink Mobile supports SMS and selected lightweight data applications, including WhatsApp messaging. The service is therefore focused primarily on maintaining basic communication in locations outside the reach of conventional mobile infrastructure rather than providing full high-speed broadband connectivity.
To access the service, customers in the DRC need a compatible LTE Android smartphone, an active Airtel DRC data bundle or data roaming enabled. Airtel has also introduced an initial 30-day trial through the MyAirtel application, after which customers can access the service through applicable data bundles. Support for Apple devices is expected to follow.
The commercial launch follows the strategic partnership between Airtel Africa and SpaceX’s Starlink, announced in December 2025. The companies subsequently conducted successful testing of Starlink Mobile’s data and messaging capabilities in Kenya in March 2026 before moving to commercial deployment in the DRC.
The DRC provides a significant opportunity for the technology because of its vast geographical size, difficult terrain and large number of communities located beyond the practical reach of conventional telecommunications infrastructure. Satellite-to-mobile technology could allow Airtel to extend coverage without having to construct traditional mobile towers in every remote location.
The technology could be particularly valuable for rural communities, mining operations, humanitarian organisations, healthcare workers, logistics companies and other users operating in areas with limited terrestrial connectivity. Improved connectivity could support communication, emergency response, business operations and access to digital services in previously underserved locations.
The development is also strategically important for Africa’s digital economy. Rather than relying exclusively on terrestrial infrastructure, telecommunications operators can increasingly combine mobile networks, fibre, fixed wireless and satellite connectivity to expand coverage. This could help reduce the infrastructure gap between urban and rural communities and support broader digital inclusion.
For Airtel Africa, the partnership creates an opportunity to expand its addressable market across its 14 African markets without depending entirely on the economics of traditional tower deployment. The companies had indicated that the satellite-to-mobile rollout would proceed across Airtel Africa’s markets subject to country-specific regulatory approvals.
From an investment perspective, the development could stimulate new opportunities across Africa’s telecommunications, satellite technology, digital services, enterprise connectivity and rural infrastructure sectors. As satellite-to-mobile technology develops, its potential applications could expand beyond messaging and lightweight data to higher-speed connectivity and a broader range of digital services.
