ASKY, the Pan-African airline, has announced a new air service connecting Kano, Nigeria, and Niamey, Niger, in a move expected to strengthen trade, tourism and commercial ties between the two cities. The new service is scheduled to commence on September 2, 2026.
The route will make Kano the 31st destination on ASKY’s growing network, which now spans more than 30 cities across 28 African countries. The service will be routed through the airline’s hub in Lomé, Togo, giving passengers travelling from Kano and Niamey access to onward connections across West and Central Africa.
The new connection is expected to improve regional mobility and provide businesses with a faster and more convenient transportation link between northern Nigeria and Niger. It could also support increased movement of traders, investors, tourists and other travellers between the two markets.
According to ASKY, the route also revives a historic commercial corridor that has connected Kano and the wider West African region for more than a thousand years. The corridor historically served as an important route for trans-Saharan trade, with merchants travelling between Kano and markets across the region by foot, camel caravan and later by road.
The new air link is therefore expected to give the longstanding commercial relationship between Kano and Niamey a modern transportation dimension while strengthening their integration into wider regional markets.
Beyond its immediate impact on passenger travel, the service could support cross-border trade, tourism, business development and regional economic integration. Improved air connectivity is also expected to make it easier for businesses in Kano to access other West and Central African destinations through ASKY’s Lomé hub. Overall, the new route strengthens Kano’s position as a regional commercial and transportation hub while expanding ASKY’s role in connecting African markets.
