The Nigerian government has introduced the National Electronic Extension Platform (NEEP) to help farmers improve their productivity and access better agricultural services. Dr. Aliyu Abdullahi, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, launched this digital platform at the National Agricultural Extension Research Summit in Abuja
NEEP is designed to connect farmers with research institutions, making it easier for them to get the latest agricultural information in real time. This platform will work closely with the National Agricultural and Extension System (NARES) and other key agencies to help bridge the gap between extension agents and the farmers who need their support.
By providing interactive, cost-effective access to essential farming tips and advice, NEEP offers a modern alternative to traditional extension services. This is especially important as it also reduces the security risks that field agents often face when visiting remote areas.
Officials at the event highlighted that Nigeria’s extension services have struggled in the past due to issues like inconsistent policies, inadequate funding, and limited use of modern technology. However, digital tools like NEEP—part of the National Agricultural Technology and Innovation Policy (NATIP) 2022-2027—are seen as a big step toward overcoming these challenges.
Dr. Deola Tayo Lordbanjou, Director of the Federal Department of Agricultural Extension Service, noted that the platform will be available in multiple languages including English, Pidgin, Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo. This ensures that even farmers with limited formal education can easily understand and benefit from the information provided. Farmers will be able to ask questions and receive answers immediately, while extension agents will have a comprehensive database of agricultural knowledge at their fingertips.
Prof. Garba Hamidu Sharubut, Executive Secretary of the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), also stressed the importance of this new approach. He called for increased advocacy, more irrigation farming, and better access to farm inputs to help tackle the food security challenge in the country.
Overall, the launch of NEEP marks an important milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to enhance farming practices, improve productivity, and boost the overall livelihood of its agricultural communities.
