The Federal Government of Nigeria has signed a concession agreement with Quaint Energy for the development of two small hydropower plants with a combined capacity of 8 megawatts (MW) in Oyo and Kogi States.
The projects include a 6 MW plant at Ikere Gorge in Oyo State and a 2 MW facility at Omi-Kampe in Kogi State. The signing ceremony took place in Abuja, with top officials of the Ministry of Power and representatives of Quaint Energy in attendance.
Minister of Power, described the deal as a strategic intervention to boost renewable energy generation and rural electrification across the country.
“This is more than a hydropower concession. It is a deliberate step to advance energy access, stimulate state electricity markets, and enhance local industrial productivity through clean and renewable energy sources,” the Minister said.
The concession marks another milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to attract private investment into the power sector, especially in renewable and off-grid solutions.
Chairman of Quaint Energy, Femi Adeyanju, expressed optimism about the partnership’s impact, noting that the projects will deliver reliable power to nearby communities and foster economic development.
“These plants will not only generate electricity but also support agro-processing and small industries in the surrounding areas,” Adeyanju said.
The projects are expected to improve electricity supply for local households and businesses, create jobs during construction, and strengthen the energy infrastructure of both Oyo and Kogi States.
Energy analysts say the 8 MW capacity, though modest, reflects the growing trend of decentralised renewable power generation and could serve as a model for similar initiatives across Nigeria.
