The Federal Government has secured 200 hectares of land in the Lekki Free Trade Zone (FTZ), Lagos, for the establishment of a Building Materials Manufacturing Hub, a flagship initiative under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Hon. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, confirmed the development during a tour of the Lekki and Lagos Free Zones. He stated that the hub is designed to cut housing construction costs, enhance local content, and improve access to affordable housing across the country.
“This hub will significantly reduce our dependence on imports, conserve foreign exchange, and create thousands of jobs through domestic production,” the Minister emphasised.
Key Highlights
- Pilot Project: The Lekki FTZ hub will serve as the blueprint for six additional hubs across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.
- Nationwide Rollout: Planned locations include Sagamu (Ogun), Aba (Abia), Warri/Asaba (Delta), Ajaokuta (Kogi), Kano (Kano), and Gombe (Gombe).
- Products: Roofing sheets, tiles, ceilings, and doors will be manufactured locally, supported by power, water, and worker accommodation facilities.
- Investor Engagement: An anchor investor has already been secured under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework.
- Infrastructure Advantage: The hub will leverage the Lekki Deep Sea Port, rail links, airports, and road networks for efficient logistics.
- Free Zone Incentives: Investors will benefit from tax holidays, duty exemptions, and world-class infrastructure to boost competitiveness.
Outlook
The Housing Ministry confirmed that fiscal support measures, including low-interest financing, grants, and PPP incentives in place to ensure sustainability. Analysts note that the initiative represents a turning point for Nigeria’s housing sector, non-oil industrial growth, and affordability agenda, though success will depend on stable power, policy consistency, and efficient execution.
