Nigeria has entered a landmark partnership with LONGi Green Energy Technology Co. Ltd, the world’s leading solar panel manufacturer, to establish a solar panel manufacturing plant in the country.
The deal, which was formalised during a visit by officials of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) to LONGi’s headquarters in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, China, marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s quest to deepen its renewable energy capacity and reduce dependence on imported solar technologies.
Under the partnership, LONGi and the Nigerian government will collaborate on developing a 500 to 1,000-megawatt solar panel manufacturing facility, which will support the nation’s drive toward energy self-sufficiency and green industrialisation.
During the high-level meeting, LONGi’s President Boshen Zhong and Vice President Li Wenxue received the Nigerian delegation, led by ECN officials, and conducted a guided tour of the company’s modern production lines. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to advancing Nigeria’s renewable energy objectives through local manufacturing, technology transfer, and capacity building.
Speaking at the event, LONGi executives emphasised that the partnership would not only deliver cutting-edge technology but also foster job creation, local expertise, and sustainable development in Nigeria’s growing solar industry.
The ECN stated that the agreement aligns with the National Energy Transition Plan (NETP) which prioritises investment in clean energy to power homes, industries, and rural communities.
When completed, the solar panel plant is expected to reduce project costs, accelerate the deployment of off-grid and mini-grid systems, and make Nigeria a regional hub for solar technology manufacturing in Africa.
Officials from both sides noted that feasibility studies and site selection will commence in the coming months, with the facility expected to commence operations upon completion of the initial development phase.
